What Did Galileo Discover?
In the winter of 1609–10, Galileo pointed an improved telescope at the sky and found things that should not have been there: four moons orbiting Jupiter, mountains and craters on the Moon, countless stars in the Milky Way, and soon the phases of Venus. Each was evidence that the heavens were neither perfect nor centred on the Earth. He published in 1610 and became famous within months. Twenty-three years later the Roman Inquisition tried him — not for observing, which no one disputed, but for arguing in print that the Earth truly moves. He spent his last nine years under house arrest, and wrote his best physics there.

- Galileo did not invent the telescope — Dutch spectacle-makers did, in 1608. He built better ones, reaching about 20× magnification, and was the first to publish a systematic astronomical survey with one.
- Jupiter's four large moons — Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto — are still called the Galilean moons. Their existence mattered because they proved a body could orbit something other than the Earth.

- The muttered "and yet it moves" (eppur si muove) has no contemporary evidence — it first appears more than a century later. Under house arrest at Arcetri, going blind, he wrote Two New Sciences, arguably his most important work.
What the telescope showed
Word of the Dutch spyglass reached Italy in 1609; Galileo grasped its scientific use faster than its inventors and ground better lenses to exploit it. What he saw over the following months dismantled a set of assumptions that had held for centuries. The Moon was not a polished celestial sphere but a landscape — mountains casting shadows, craters, a rough surface like the Earth's. The Milky Way resolved into individual stars. And on 7 January 1610 he noticed three small "stars" beside Jupiter that changed position night after night; a fourth appeared, and their motion made only one sense: they were moons, circling Jupiter.
He published this in Sidereus Nuncius ("Starry Messenger") in March 1610, a short, fast, deliberately accessible book that made him famous across Europe. Later that year came the phases of Venus, which was the observation with real theoretical teeth: in the Earth-centred system Venus could never show a full sequence of phases, and in the Sun-centred one it must.
What he was actually tried for
The distinction the trial turned on is easy to lose. Nobody senior in Rome denied Galileo's observations — Jesuit astronomers confirmed them. The dispute was over what they licensed you to claim. In 1616 the Church declared the Sun-centred model formally contrary to Scripture, and Galileo was instructed that he could discuss it as a hypothesis, useful for calculation, but not assert it as physically true.
For sixteen years he complied, more or less. Then in 1632 he published the Dialogue: three characters debating the two systems, in Italian rather than Latin so that any educated reader could follow, with the Earth-centred arguments given to a figure whose name signals foolishness. It was a hypothetical framing that fooled nobody. Summoned in 1633, aged 69 and ill, he was shown the 1616 instruction, threatened with torture in the formal manner of the procedure, and convicted of holding and defending a condemned doctrine. He abjured on his knees, and his sentence — initially imprisonment — was commuted to house arrest for life.
The nine years after, and the long afterlife
Confined at Arcetri outside Florence, forbidden to publish, and losing his sight by 1638, Galileo wrote the book that mattered most for physics. Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences — smuggled to a Dutch publisher because Italian printing was closed to him — set out uniform acceleration, projectile trajectories as parabolas, and the strength of materials. He died in January 1642, still under sentence. The rehabilitation was glacial: the Dialogue stayed on the Index of prohibited books until 1835, and it was 1992 before a papal commission formally acknowledged the errors of the trial. The reason the case is still argued over is that it is not a simple fable of science versus religion — the astronomical evidence in 1633 was genuinely incomplete, Galileo was tactically reckless with allies who had protected him, and the Church was defending interpretive authority rather than a telescope reading. What is not in doubt is who turned out to be right about the motion of the Earth.

Did Galileo invent the telescope?
No. The first practical telescopes were made by Dutch spectacle-makers around 1608. Galileo heard of the device in 1609, built substantially better versions reaching about 20× magnification, and was the first to use one for a systematic published survey of the sky — which is the reason his name is attached to it.
What was Galileo actually convicted of?
Of holding and defending, as physically true, the doctrine that the Earth moves around the Sun — after having been formally instructed in 1616 that he could treat it only as a calculating hypothesis. His observations were never the charge; Jesuit astronomers had confirmed them. The 1632 Dialogue made the assertion unmistakable, and he was convicted in 1633 and sentenced to house arrest for life.
Did Galileo really say "and yet it moves"?
Almost certainly not, at least not then. The phrase eppur si muove first appears in print more than a century after the trial. Muttering defiance immediately after a forced abjuration in front of the Inquisition would also have been extraordinarily dangerous. It is a good story that captures a true situation.
