Why quizzing works (when it's connected)

In experiments with educational prose, Roediger and Karpicke found that recall tests produced better delayed retention than repeated study under their study conditions. Immediate results and delayed results differed, so the honest lesson is not “quizzes always win”; it is that attempting recall can be useful when the questions match material already studied.

Question quality, feedback, timing, and later review all matter. A short app quiz is a practice opportunity, not a complete assessment of historical knowledge.

It is worth being precise about what those questions are today: on all but a handful of stories they are generic recall prompts — asking what kind of thing the subject was, why it still matters, which field it belongs to — applied to every story rather than written about the one you just read.
